What a gravel e-bike is

A gravel bike is built for distance on surfaces that are not quite road: farm tracks, forest rides, old railway lines, and quiet lanes that turn to gravel at the parish boundary. The drop bar gives you a second hand position for a long day and a narrower profile into the wind, while the wider tyres and clearance let you keep going when the tarmac runs out.

The honest caveat is weight. An e-gravel bike is a few kilos heavier than the unassisted version, and assistance stops at 15.5 mph, so on a fast flat group ride you are pedalling all of it. Where it earns its keep is the climb at the end of the day, the loaded weekend, and the headwind on the way home - the three things that actually stop people riding further.

Who a gravel e-bike suits

  • Mixed-surface days where tarmac is the link between the good bits, not the point.
  • Light touring and bikepacking on quiet lanes and tracks.
  • Riders who want road pace with the option to leave the road.
  • Anyone whose usual loop has one hill they would happily never climb unassisted again.

What to check before you buy

  • Tyre clearance, in millimetres, and what is fitted as standard. Clearance cannot be added later and it decides which surfaces the bike is honest about.
  • Gearing range. A wide cassette matters more with weight on board, especially on the day the battery is flat.
  • Mounts: guards, a frame bag, bottle cages and a rear rack. Gravel bikes are bought for days out, and the mounts are how a day out is carried.
  • Battery size against frame-bag space. A large in-frame pack can eat the space you wanted for luggage.
  • Brakes. Discs are standard here, but cable-operated discs on a heavy bike in the wet are worth avoiding.
